Usually caused when a herniated disk or bone spur in the spine presses on the nerve, sciatica originates in the spine and radiates down the back of the leg. Sciatica typically affects only one side of the body.
The Feldenkrais approach to the pain of sciatica is based on relieving or supporting the area where the nerve pressure originates (pelvis, spine). This produces immediate relief, without numbing the area (compared to anti-inflammatories or epidurals).
Sciatica is often aggravated by imbalanced body positioning for extended periods of time, asymmetrical movement, or repetitive motion. Feldenkrais work identifies these possible causes of sciatica and offers alternatives such as better movement options, restful, supported body positions, and engagement of the whole body in motion. Feldenkrais addresses the root cause of the sciatica and provides solutions, rather than only fixate on the symptom.
In addition, you gain body awareness through subtle changes in your habits and postures. As you allow your head and chest to be more upright, the weight and pressure on your lower back diminishes. A longer, taller spine emerges, reducing the pressure on the discs and the referred pain. As you use your body more symmetrically, your body takes care of the uneven overcompensation and wear and tear on your joints, thus reducing and avoiding sciatica pain.
In other words, Feldenkrais is focused on finding the root cause of your sciatica and providing you with movement solutions and sustainable practices for pain-free living, rather than trying to sell you costly pills or painful injections.
